One of the best artists of the 20th century was Robert Pincus. He created many works that still are admired today. His paintings are known for their beauty, their complexity, and their boldness. Yet, there are several things that you may not know about him.
Teaching Experience
The teaching experience of Robert Pincus is nothing short of impressive. The man is a bona fide academic whose most recent gig is an Associate Professor at the prestigious New York Medical College. His credentials include a medical degree from the University of Michigan and a long career in otolaryngology at the Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center. He also serves as the founding director of the Center for Sinus Disease and Functional Ear Surgery, a non-profit based in Brooklyn. As a jack of all trades, he is adept at all the usual suspects, including patient care, administration and management.
Aside from the obvious clinical and administrative tasks, he has also been known to dabble in the arts. In addition to his many scholarly endeavors, he has become a philanthropist, donating his fortune to worthy causes.
Obituary
Robert Pincus was an art historian and art critic. He first coined the term “Post-Minimalism” in an Artforum article about Eva Hesse.
Aside from his many other accomplishments, he was also a dedicated chronicler of the art scene. His diary entries, written in the 1970s and ’80s, are among the most intriguing of the era.
As a writer, Pincus was notably chatty and well-versed in all facets of the visual arts. In fact, he is one of the few writers to move from the academic to the commercial realm. At one point he was a senior editor at the Gagosian Gallery and curated shows for the gallery.
Pincus has also taught at the University of San Diego, the University of Southern California and San Diego State University. He is a frequent writer for Art News, where he has been writing for three decades. And he was awarded a number of journalism prizes for his art reviews.
Post-Impressionism
Post-Minimalism is a term coined by art historian Robert Pincus-Witten in 1971. It describes a wide range of art practices, including Process art, Land art, and Body art, as well as Conceptual art. The term is usually used to describe artwork that combines unusual materials, or features repetitive modular compositions.
Minimalism is a style of art that emerged in the 1960s. In contrast to Abstract Expressionism, which emphasized closed geometric forms and high-energy rhythms, Minimalism favored open structures and soft materials. This style of art was influenced by neo-classical music, which featured lush harmonies and rich rhythms.
Post-Minimalism was a reaction to Minimalism. It sought to counter the austere forms of Minimalism by creating more interpretative artwork. Unlike the purely abstract, minimalist works of the Minimalists, post-minimalist art seeks to create strong material presences.
Overbilling
If you’re wondering why Robert Pincus, a former custodian of TransPerfect Global Inc., has come under intense scrutiny, it may be because he allegedly overbilled the company millions of dollars. In fact, TransPerfect believes his actions constitute a violation of the company’s Constitution.
He billed the company more than three million dollars per quarter for more than three years. The company says he also cut benefits, raised healthcare costs for employees, and used money from TransPerfect to fund his own law firm.
The company also claims that his actions created a “perverse incentive” for him to create billing opportunities, which were paid for by the company. It has argued that the former custodian’s unlawful actions should be prosecuted in the name of the company, not in his name.
Relationship with Chancellor Bouchard
The relationship between former Chancellor Andre Bouchard and former Custodian Robert Pincus goes back to at least the early 1990s, when the two were at Skadden Arps. In the early 2000s, Pincus’s firm was involved in the sale of translation giant TransPerfect Global Inc. Several years later, the company and its former attorneys were overbilled for thousands of hours of work.
Bouchard and Pincus worked together on other cases, including a merger between Zillow Trulia and Viacom Inc. During that time, the pair were involved in some high-profile cases, including a desegregation case in New Castle County. But while the relationship may have been beneficial for the parties, it was also highly controversial.
